About the Author
Angela Stent is director of the Center for Eurasian, Russian, and East European Studies and a professor of government and foreign service at Georgetown University. From 2004 to 2006, she served as national intelligence officer for Russia and Eurasia at the National Intelligence Council. She is the author of The Limits of Partnership, for which she won the American Academy of Diplomacy's Douglas Dillon prize for the best book on the practice of American diplomacy.

This book is mainly a recounting of the history of Russia's relations with other countries. In the chapter about Japan, for example, we learn about the Russo-Japanese war. It's hard to say how that is part of Putin's World.The history may not be exciting but it's thorough. But stop reading when you get to the present. First, the author burnishes her credentials with the never-Trump foreign policy establishment in a chapter on current U.S.-Russia relations that thoroughly reeks of Trump Derangement Syndrome. It's a chapter filled with misrepresentations and just plain falsehoods.As for the future, the author says the U.S. must stand firm but be flexible and open to improved relations. Really - that's it. We need to look elsewhere for imaginative solutions.
Highly repetitive, both between and within chapters. Nothing new in content. Hard to believe the author had a significant position in last administration. No new insights. The Russians will always be as they always have been: paranoid, belligerent, backward, arrogant, not to be trusted. This book reconfirms that, but is a waste of time.
Excellent! A much needed and timely account of one of the greatest threats to American national security today.The current crop of pro-Russian “fellow travelers†may not approve of Ms Stent’s work. Those who have had family members living under Soviet tyranny are not as naive as today’s Putin cheerleaders in the US and elsewhere.
