About the Author

Michael Bonner is a second-grade teacher at South Greenville Elementary School in Greenville, NC. He is working hard every day to make a profound impact on his students with his vision to teach them to become productive global citizens. Michael was voted Teacher of the Year by his peers and also received the Pacesetters Award from the American Association for Blacks in Higher Education. Michael was honored by Ellen DeGeneres in recognition of his positive and innovative approaches to education for children struggling with the challenges of poverty. Positively a MUST Read for everyone - not just teachers,but parents, students, teachers-to-be - EVERYONE! Amazing insightful, raw, inspirational real in depth look at a teacher's journey -the trials & tribulations -the good, the bad and those ever so rewarding moments & knowing you reached someone-making a lifetime difference! My college son, an urban area, elementary special education teacher-in-training was so deeply moved, encouraged and motivated by Mr. Bonner's writings and his experiences! He (my son) is actually a Bonner (how ironic-the name) Scholar and on advisory board-attending a conference in NY this weekend and he is bringing this amazing book #getUpOrGiveUp with him to share and discuss with others! Thank YOU Mr. Bonner for writing this book for sharing and encouraging so many "students" of all ages!

It is the beginning of my Thanksgiving vacation week and since I love to read my first thought to begin my relaxing week is to find a book to read. I had heard about this book and it was on my wishlist. After a challenging couple of weeks in my classroom for some reason this just seemed to be the book I needed to read. I am not sorry I chose this book. It was inspiring, uplifting and motivating. I have a good group of kids but we have been out on sync due to schedules at school. This book helped me realize that after my vacation week is over I can go back have a class family meeting and work to get us all back on track and learning together again. Great read and highly recommended!!

Validating.I finally got the chance to crack this book open and told myself I’d only read a few chapters; that I instead should focus on my to-do list. You know that didn’t work and I demolished the book in an hour and a half!Even at such a novice level of teaching, I totally needed this recharge. The root of my fears, concerns, and uncertainties stemmed from the belief that it was still so early in my “career” to be on such a seemingly downhill roller coaster. It had nothing to do with my kids, but that I felt that my inability to reach them was a sign that I wasn’t in the right place. Thankfully, though, things are truly on their way up!Michael Bonner, thank you for sharing your testimony with the world. I would have never guessed you doubted yourself at one point in time, but it’s refreshing to hear. Your four classroom paradigms WILL be implemented first thing tomorrow and your daily affirmation will be printed, framed, and given a new home on my desk. You da man! It’s only the beginning for you, brother! I’m overjoyed to see all that you are accomplishing.Time to GET UP!

Just got done reading Michael Bonner’s Book. Just wow. One of the best educational stories I have read: unfiltered descriptions of the ups and downs of his journey. He is such a powerful storyteller; it is no surprise that his teaching captivates all of his students. From talking about marital issues to students throwing chairs - the latter of which has happened to multiple times in my classrooms - hearing about his experience will make new educators feel that they aren’t alone. Seeing that those things also happen to experts will make new educators feel that they shouldn’t quit just because of a few bad days. Between that and the useful apps he describes to help teachers utilize data, I would highly recommend this book to new and veteran teachers alike. As he says, “keep drilling” until your students succeed :).Thanks again, Mr. Bonner!

I couldn’t put this book down. This was amazing! As a first year teacher working in a Title I school, I related to everything. I thought my background growing up in a neighborhood of proverty and not being a statistic would fuel my elementary scholars. Negative! Without telling the book his 4 concepts will work. I don’t have the urge to quit but I’ve encountered others who have or want too. But I read this book wanting to prevent the urge from happening to me. The book accomplished that. Thank you for writing what was inside you Mr. Bonner!

A great story by a man who truly has a passion for what he does and inspires teachers around him each and every day. I'm grateful to have met him and he makes me want to be a better teacher and work harder for my students.

I got this book right after a rough week in my classroom. Bonner reminds teachers in a real and honest way why we chose this career. He gives his perspective on the current state of education and how no matter how challenging the students or the environment may get, positive change is possible! This book provides tips and strategies to get a handle on your classroom, life, and relationships with your students.It was an easy read well worth the time!!!

By far the best book I’ve read in years!! I was able to read the entire book in one day, literally from start to finish. Very inspirational and Michael certainly didn’t hold back to paint a pretty picture. He described the multiple obstacles he faced and how he was able to overcome. I recommend anyone that’s discouraged or giving up on their dreams to read this and I guarantee you will be encouraged and motivated to continue to the finish line!
