I understand this wasn’t intended to be a complete biography and that St. Patrick did not have a ton of writings, but it seemed to very quickly fly through his life and left me wanting more. Aside from that, it was a helpful work to be introduced to the Saint.
The author was able to transport me to Patrick's world. The pace was good and the reading interesting. I like the biographies in this series.
This is a short treatise of Patricius' story of how he was kidnapped by pirates around 400 A.D., sold to an Irish clansman, then escaped, then returned and changed Ireland forever. The first missionary to teach outside the safety of the Roman Empire (London was occupied at the time by a Roman governorship). And the first missionary to teach barbarians. Shows the lighthearted side of this remarkable story...

This book is a good short biography of the mystical Saint Patrick. It dispels a lot of rumors about the early bishop and is a easy interesting read. I would recommend to fans of this saint.
There is so much legend with St. Patrick and it’s hard to separate fact from fiction. From that perspective, I would say this book is helpful. It’s not written from a perspective of someone trying to over-glorify St. Patrick but someone who is trying to stick close to the facts. In addition to that component of the book, I wasn’t that thrilled with the story of his life, which sounds sacrilegious to say about someone who God used as a missionary to England. But that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate St. Patrick’s burden to go back to witness to those who enslaved him. It’s just not the most compelling writing you will ever come across.
Saint PatrickIn honor of Saint Patrick's day I read a book about the real man: Thomas Nelson's Christian Encounters Saint Patrick by Jonathan Rogers. I received a free copy from Thomas Nelson for reviewing it on my blog (and I liked it).The Christian Encounters series aims to make Church History more accessible to a wider audience. This little book did just that. It includes lots of historical and factual information in a book that is easy to read and enjoy. I had read (the much weightier) How the Irish Saved Civilization and am fascinated by Saint Patrick. This book upfront tells you that not a whole lot is know about the man, and what we know comes from two letters written by Patrick (which wonderfully are included at the end of the book). Rogers fills in gaps with informed speculation (admittedly) and historical information. And he also includes lots of the myths and legends surrounding Patrick. I learned some new things; Patrick was not the first to bring Christianity to Ireland, there were already some British believers there; Patrick, though a bishop, was against the hierarchy and took his orders straight from God (which can be dangerous or earth changing). It shouldn't be surprising, but I was, in how much scripture Patrick quoted in his letters and also how the faith has remained true over 2000 years. Patrick lived in the 400s but one could take his words as a modern day frontier missionary.This book is great for anyone who is interested in Patrick. Because it is quick read, it would be a good choice for a student biography review. And it is a wonderful encouragement to keep listening and following God. Patrick gave up everything, except his faith, to return to the land of his former enslavement. God rewarded him for his zeal. His boldness and dedication to reaching the ends of the earth for Christ is amazing, and it makes me wonder, who will be the Patrick for some countries in our time!
Jonathan Rogers' "St. Patrick" packs a lot into a small book. Drawing from the scan biographical details contained in St. Patrick's writings, this book takes the reader into the world in which he lived. It makes much of St. Patrick's role as a Roman who took Christianity beyond the Roman Empire, the first missionary to do so. As an emissary of a collapsing empire, Patrick took its culture to a foreign land where it would be adopted and preserved while Barbarian invasions would ravage its homeland. Rogers raises interesting thoughts, such as the possibility that Patrick's father and grandfather, a deacon and priest respectively, may have taken Holy Orders for their social and economic value, rather than out of any religious fervor. This may explain Patrick's lack of religious sense before his captivity in Ireland. Besides the rich background which this book, in contrast to many others, presents, it does provide the essence of the Patrick story. It is the story of the young boy kidnapped from his privileged home who finds God while tending flocks in the Wood of Foclut, nigh unto the Western Sea. The story continues with the call to leave and the ship ride and hike through a desolate landscape until he finds his way home. There he hears the Voice of the Irish calling him to walk among them once more. Overcoming the treachery of a friend who disclosed a youthful sin, Patrick is ordained a bishop makes it back to Ireland to which he voluntarily makes himself a slave.This book concludes with Patrick's two known works, The Confession and the Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus. Although short, this book provides a good grounding into the story of St. Patrick to the uninitiated and a deeper understanding to long time students.
