You'll notice right off that the pics in this book are from the 70's/80's, but the how-to of building simple, low-cost houses is right-on. The author puts everything in layman's terms- you won't have to be a professional to understand it! plus, this book is THICK- he's got all the info you could want. I especially like his ideas for how to acquire used and salvaged materials, to keep costs down.I haven't read the whole book yet (as I said, its thick!), but so far, its been exactly what I was looking for, in trying to learn how to build an energy efficient home on a shoestring.
This is one of those books you never forget and are always referring to.I bought this book long before Amazon even existed, and used it as a primary guide to designing and building a post and beam home in Nova Scotia in the 1980's.I have never seen a more complete and useful collection of advice for new homes - even today! It is excellent!!Mark
My wife and I were members of the Organic Gardening Book Club in the '70s. One month I forgot to return the computer card so I wouldn't receive that month's offering, and "30 Energy Efficient Houses You Can Build" showed up in my mailbox. I decided to read it before returning it....and then I read it again....and again. When Alex Wade's follow-up became available, this book was immediately purchased, and read several times. The two books became my 'bible' for the house I designed and built. I didn't go as small as Alex might have wished, but I was able to build my 2400 square foot house for under $40k. I'd never built a house before (I did have extensive experience using wood-working tools.), and it took me 7 years before we moved in (I did everything but the masonry work, mostly alone.), but it was well worth it. Both of Wade's books are easy to read and understand, and his offerings are still as valuable as when they were first published.
