I am buying this book after checking it out of my local library. It is both a useful reference book and a thoughtful explication of photography, worthy for finding an answer to a quick question as well as careful reading. Also, most importantly, it taught me how to approach exposure while in manual mode. With this book, I have gone from aperture priority/come what may girl to manual monster super hero. You should see my histograms.Given the great number of photography books I have read, I cannot say with certainty readers of this book will necessarily come to a similar level of prowess with their DSLR cameras as me. Still, I think Gatcum's approach to teaching (as opposed and merely to informing) is especially apt.

This book meets my expectations. It contains (visually as well) all of the information I need to learn how to take better photographs focusing heavily on the creative side and not just technical.

I am an amateur photographer, checked this book out of our library, and got so much good out of it, I bought it. Use it as a reference all the time.

Nuff said.

the basic principles on optics and physics related to photography are quite superficial; it focus rather basic digital techniques.

Photography is a fun hobby for some and a rewarding career for others. I have actively been trying to improve my photography skills, and I have collected a few books on various topics relating to photography. I was pleased to have the opportunity to look at this book, which has turned out to be a much better book for me than most. It is suitable for the beginner as well as more experienced photographers and would work well in a course of study. The author breaks the material up into 6 major sections and each section are further subdivided into smaller, bite-sized topics. The main sections are 1. Exposure, 2. Light & Color, 3. Lenses, 4. Composition, 5. Post-Processing, and finally 6. In the Bag. Within these sections are relevant subtopics, such as ISO Settings and Shutter Speed under the Exposure section.I like the author’s writing style - neither coddling nor condescending, but very even and helpful. It seems the author has a general audience in mind and he does an excellent job explaining concepts and ideas that beginners can relate to and more seasoned photographers can use as refresher material. Overall - very well written material.Embedded within the sections of the book are several “Masterclass” topics presenting professional photographers and their insights. These are a bit more heady than the rest of the book but are still not beyond the reach of most. I like these sections for the ideas presented and the advice they give seems solid.Of course, this book is full of a mix of good and bad photographs, all of which serve the purpose of making the point for the topic being presented (how-to and how-not-to, if you will). It occurred to me that this book would make a good textbook for the classroom. It covers a wide spectrum of topics and it had a good, logical ordering. It is written very much like a textbook in terms of style, lacking only exercises and labs.I am happy with this book and wish I had started with it. There are some great photography books out there and this one is among the better ones I have seen. It is fairly comprehensive and it is within reach of the vast majority of readers. If you can only afford one single book on photography, this is a very good one worth your consideration.

I have had a really nice camera for a while now, but never have taken the time to sit down and learn about the manual controls that I can use on the camera. This book came along just as I was thinking how I could use a course in photography.WHAT IS THIS BOOK LIKE?Sometimes there are books that look great, but when you get them, they are not. Then there are books that surpass what you expected. That is what this book is like. The idea of this book is to help you work with what you have and make the best of it- right up my alley.PARTSEach part of this book covers a different topic:ExposureLight & ColorLensesCompositionPost ProcessingIn The BagIn each part there is a MASTERCLASS which follows a photographer's work, gets advice and insight about their work so that we can learn from it.BOOK SET UPThis book has a LOT of photos in it. It also is broken down into sections that are more like an excellent text book than most. There are charts, small sections that explain a topic, and practical applications and tips throughout this book. The quality of the paper is also excellent and it is sturdy. The book itself seems to stay open more easily than most. I am not sure if it has an actual lay flat binding, but it is nice.WILL THIS APPLY TO THE CAMERA THAT YOU ALREADY HAVE?This book has a section in it which talks about each type of camera. It gives pros, cons, and information about the cameras and how they are best used. It even goes through different kinds of cases and what is best or not as good and why.BLACK AND WHITE FILM????Yes, this even has a section on developing your own black and white film. I have to say THAT surprised me.SUMMARYI have to say that this is like having an entire photography course in a book. Yes there are spots where it did not have as much information as I would have liked, but then there are places where there is a lot more than expected. This could easily be used by anyone who wants to improve their understanding and performance in photography. It could also be used to teach a class as a textbook.THE BOTTOM LINEIf you want a course in photography but can not afford to take one, this would be a great way to start. There is plenty of information to get you started on understanding and improving your performance in photography. Lots of photos, high quality book and binding, and great layout make this book one that I will refer to constantly as I learn more about photography. No matter what the camera you have, you could use this book to help improve your photo taking and learn more about what makes this fascinating hobby such an art.MY RATINGI would give this 10 stars if I could. It is an excellent book and great for beginners or those who want to brush up a bit on photography. I also found it very inspirational too if you are in a dry period like I have been.
