They say Valerius Flaccus does not measure up to Appolonius Rhodius but I think this is a fine piece of SIlver Age Latin and is very entertaining (even though the end of the work is missing). It is good to compare the Greek of Appolonius with Valerius's Latin poem on the same subject, i.e. the quest for the Golden Fleece. Also interesting to read is the Renaissance poet, Maffeo Vegio's take on this same subject matter in his Latin mini-epic. Apparently Vegio conceived of his poem before Valerius Flaccus was rediscovered in the mid 15th century. If you like Vergil and Ovid you will like Valerius Flaccus.
