There are some APUSH teachers who insist on using the AMSCO review books. I do not. The questions are way too difficult and there are not answers or explanations. That is one of the biggest reasons I tell my students to always buy Barron's. Back in the mid-1980s we used to use the red "barron's" books to review for the various Regent's exams in NY. You would always get the book in your school store or take a trip to a industrial park in the Woodbury or Syosset area. Now all these years later, Barrons has branched out into pretty much every standardized tests including AP. The text is very readable, but leans a bit left or revisionist. For example there is just as much on whether Jacob Riis was a racist as there is about Jacob Riis the muckraker who exposed the living conditions of the poor. But other than slightly revisionist leanings, the book is very good. The book is divided up into the 9 periods for APUSH and contains plenty of review questions that are multiple choice and written. And again, the real strength here is that not only does the book have plenty of questions but the book provides the answers and explanations of the answers. Also, with the essays the book provides sample responses. Again, some review books have questions and essays but no answers or examples. Barrons has also always done a good job on test taking tips and strategies. Bottom line is that I have used Barron's books as both a student back in the mid to late 1980's and I have always recommended them as a teacher whether it be Regent's Exams or AP exams. The 15$ cost of this book is well worth it when you think about the advantages of scoring a 4 or 5 on the APUSH exam and getting up to 6 credits at the college. If you are taking an AP exam, you need a review book, and the first choice should be Barron's.
My daughter is currently taking APUSH and I got this review book for her as it was available on Vine (so essentially 70% off though I review as though I paid full price). Anyway, I remember Barron's from study guides I used years ago and was always happy with them. They seemed to have more "real" type questions and provided a good review while other guides I had back then seemed to be worried about seeming too easy - so they (the other guides) included tests which made me, among other things, think I would score poorly on the ACT when I ended up doing quite well on it. So although the final review of this will really be in how well it helps her in a few months I can say after looking through it that it seems to be a well thought out review guide which I would recommend.
