A fine anthology of nineteenth century Russian literature: when this writing swept the world, and paved the way for a revolutionized world literature. Virginia Woolf compared her impressions to reading Dostoevsky for the first time with "seeing naked men crawl from a train wreck". Dostoevsky, and his worthy peers, who wrote at the very top of their art, Tolstoi and Turgenev, Pushkin, Gogol, and Chekhov in fine translations in this volume. This volume includes such other memorable Russian writers as Lermontov, Goncharov, Gorkii, Sergei Aksakov, Tyutchev and Saltykov-Shchedrin, along with a sampling of traditional Russian proverbs and folk sayings. The anthology's editor, George Gibian, includes informative editorial introductions to the selections. This is an excellent first selection of Russian literature in translation for the student, as well as the general reader.
This is an anthology of 19th century Russian writers. It includes some poetry, a play, short stories and excerpts from novels.
My son voiced interest in Russian writing and rather that settling for one particular author, I chose this collection for him as it contained poetry, essays and stories by some of the more famous writers of the 19th century, and it appears to have hit the nail on the head-he is working his way through the book!
I recommend this collection of 19th century Russian literature. It include classics such as Gogol's the Overcoat and Turgenev's First Love plus selections from a wide range of Russian writers. Each writer is introduced with a short biographical section.
I'm not an expert on Russian literature so I can't comment on if this is better than other books like it. It does seem to be a good introduction - maybe a little advanced but I am enjoying it.
Very good choice of authors and stories. My class enjoyed reading and discussing each selection. Some authors were new to many of us.

But also in that century Pushkin, Gogol, Lermontov, Turgenev, Chekhov other very major writers.In this anthology there are also included Herzen,Solovoyev, Saltykov- Schedrin, Griboyedov, Goncharov, Tyutchev, and others.The Tolstoy is 'Ivan Ilyich' and the Dostoevsky 'The Grand Inquisitor' .There are clearly written introductions to each of the works.This a an overabundantly rich anthology,an overabundance and richness which reflects the character of nineteenth century Russian Literature as a whole.
